Season Recap: Strikers

Strikers…

Pippo – B

His goals against Madrid were epic, busting his ass to get back on the pitch before the end of the season legendary.

Cassano – B

The only thing standing between Antonio and A was his fitness. But every time he was called on he did something special, be it a game tying goal or assist, his contribution was always key. A full season in Red and Black may prove truly special, but muscling into playing time may be a serious issue, Milan have a full slate of games next season, I hope Casssano realizes this and sticks around.

Robinho – A

His work rate alone earns him this mark. The man who was un-coachable, disinterested, and ill-tempered has found a new home at Milan. Now if he would just finish 1 out of every 3 chances he may have thirty goals next season.

Pato – C

Injuries marred another season and really robbed Pato of anyone continuity. When he is match fit he is stellar, but when he isn’t he fades in and out of matches and never fulfills expectations. Still has room to grow and learn but thankfully making progress.

Zlatan – A

A proven winner, eight times in a row to be exact. At times he carried this team on his back, and others he was so pestilent he was a nuisance to everyone around him. It seems this is what you get with Zlatan, Milan proved they can play without him, but with him the team has an edge that was lacking last season. He won’t win you a big match, but over the long haul there is no one better.

Happy Birthday Mr Ancelotti!

MILAN - You can't forget certain dates. Even though AC Milan and Carlos Ancelotti may have parted ways 2 years ago, the link will never trully be broken. Rossonero down his toes, first as a player and then as a coach, Carlos won 4 Champions Leagues, 2 intercontinental cups, 1 club World Cup and 3 league titles. On the day of his 52nd birthday, the club and all the fans wish him a very happy birthday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY VILA AND PAPASTATHOPOULOS

MILAN - Many happy returns for Didac Vilà and Sokratis Papastathopolous who respectively celebrate their 22nd and 23rd birthdays today. Didac was born in Matarò on 9 June and arrived at the club last January. He made his debut against Udinese on 22 May. The Greek defender was born in Kalamata on 9 June 1988 and made his debut with Milan against Cesena on 11 September 2010. Best wishes from all the fans.

Season Recap: Midfield

Time for midfielders…

Ambro – B

Tough with the injury, but before he went down he was bossing the Milan midfield much like Van Bommel after him. Sitting in front of the defense he looked like a man reborn, playing simple and keeping Milan in great tactical shape for the early part of the season. Even his bursts forward were excellent, and injury kept us from seeing how good he could have really been this season.

Rino-B

So many highs and lows for Rino this season. The Tottenham debacle was black mark on a fine season, but his leadership and tenacity are irreplaceable. Every time people want to say he is finished he comes back stronger, what he lacks in pace he makes up in heart, and his goal against Juve still stands as a crucial one on the season giving us a much needed 1-0 win.

Seedorf-B

Also reborn under Allegri, he came on strong to finish the season when Milan needed him most. He is no longer a player for the future, but his value on the bench will be useful next season. He wore the Captain’s armband for Milan for the first time, a well deserved honor, and one that seemed to translate to the pitch. Credit to Max for getting a little more out of Clarence.

Pirlo – D

Injury aside, even when he was on the pitch he struggled for form. Moving him to LM looked like a stroke of genius but then injury struck and he was unable to regain his place. A sad way to see off a legend, but with both team and player having different expectations and looking toward the future Pirlo’s time at Milan is complete.

Flamini – D

In and out of favor, he was like Jekkyl-Hyde, one minute flying in to shank the ball high and wide, the next he is putting in a two-footed challenge that would make even the toughest fan cringe. Scored a single goal on the season, and when he played in a control manner was an asset, but sadly played more like the chicken without a head and maybe cashing in on him may not be a bad idea.

Merkel – C

Played well when called upon, didn’t set the World on fire, but has a lot to learn and grow. Reminded me a bit of Gourcuff as a player, but only the good non-mental parts. Versatile enough to play behind strikers and on the flanks, a good asset for the future.

Strasser –C

Same can be said for Rodney, played well when called upon, but never stellar enough to make him a first teamer. Scored a crucial goal and was rewarded with an up-close and personal grab by Cassano. Will make a decent DM if he continues to grow.

Urby – C

The January signing made an impact in the Copa Italia, but did little else. Has a lot of room to learn still and because Milan doesn’t employ wingers looked a little out place. I thought he could be a LB, but that doesn’t appear to be the case, interested to see what the future holds for Urby. Maybe be a better bargaining chip than a first teamer.

Van Bommel – A

Coming in for Ambro, and filling his shoes flawlessly was a key to the Title. Sure he got some cards thrown his way, but what did we expect. Played so well in fact he earned himself a second year in Red and Black, rightfully so, like many scudetto before it, this one has Dutch hands on it, thanks to Mark Van Bommel.

Prince – A

This guy brought it all, played wherever Allegri needed him to, and was a beast in front of goal. One of the most crucial signings of the season after Zlatan, and will be a fixture in Milan for years to come. Where he plays is up to Max, but at this point as long as he is on the pitch we will reap the benefits.

NUTRILTE AND THE MILAN FOUNDATION TOGETHER FOR NAPLES

MILAN - The project "A Goal for Naples" has been a huge success. A donation of $2500 for every goal scored by AC Milan in the Italian championship has led to the building of a new multi purpose sports centre in Poggioreale. The new centre will allow children from the city centre of Naples to practice sport in a healthy and educational enviroment. Within the international structure of the Help the Children project Amway One by One, the season just passed which brought victory to AC Milan in Italy's top division, meant that NUTRILITE managed to raise a sum of $150,000 for the construction of the Poggioreale sports centre. The iniziative, developed in conjunction with the Polisportiva Europa di Napoli, aims to strengthen soprt as both a recreative and educational tool for young people."This year the collaboration with Nutrilite has shown itself to be a great help for the Milan Foundation" said Laura Masi, general secretary for the Milan Foundation Onlus. "We are very proud to have participated in this project, which donates an important space for children in Naples to grow and follow the values of sport, of which Onlus and all of Milan believe in strongly. The presence of Gianluca Zambrotta here in Naples is a huge testimony as to how much our club, and all of our players's hearts hold these values strongly". The Amway One by One campaign has already raised 250,000 dollars for the Milan Foundation. Last season, a contribution of 150,000 dollars made possible the construction of a sporting facility for children who suffered from the earthquake in Aquila. During the 2008-2009 season, 100,000 dollars were donated to the Bambino Buzzi hospital in Milan.

FINAL OF THE SECOND SERIE ORA TROPHY

The Milanello sports centre, home of Italian champions AC Milan, will be the theatre for the final of the second edition of the trophy that started in April last year and gives young players from parishes all over Lombardy the chance to showcase their skills. The club is promoting the project alongside CSI, FOM and FOI.
36 teams are taking part in this year's tournament, representing the city of Milan and the provinces. Of all the teams taking part only four will get to today's final at Milanello. "COC" and "Virtus Milano" will battle it out for the trophy while, "GSO Vimodrone" and"San Carlo Milano" will be playing for the third place spot.
Things don't end there however. There will also be prizes for the best player of the tounament and also a special Fair Play award for the team that demonstarted the most sporting behaviour on the pitch. These prizes are meant to recognise the importance of the values that can be transmitted through sports, regardless of the final results, confirming the value of a project such as "Milan and the Oratories".
The afternoon dedicated to Serie OrA will start at 17.30 with the final scheduled for 18.30 and the awards ceremony at 20.00.Stefano Nova will be representing the club and the President of the CSI, Massimo Achini will also be present.

GIOVANISSIMI ’98: MILAN TRIUMPH IN "MEMORIAL COSSETTI"

There is a tournament in Lovere which has been  sport and solidarity for four years. The Memorial Cossetti trophy involves teams from the Esordienti and Giovanissimi categories, from local clubs to those known on a national scale, like Chievo Verona, Hellas Verona, AlbinoLeffe, Atalanta, Torino and Milan.
The Rossoneri were represented by Walter De Vecchi’s Giovanissimi Regionali, who had already won important competitions such as the “Niccolo’ Galli”, the "Venaria" and the "Lennart Johanson Trophy".
Also, in this competition, Milan played quality football and qualified for the final after defeating Chievo Verona 2-0 and Atalanta 3-0. The final against Torino was played on the pitch of Porto Turistico in Lovere, and De Vecchi’s young players sealed their success with a 3-2 victory.
