A SHOW OF CHARACTER

January 19th, 2012 No comments
MILANO – Here’s what the interested parties had to say after Milan-Novara in the Tim Cup: MASSIMILIANO ALLEGRI"Pato felt some pain in his lower back and the medical staff will look at him tomorrow. We’ll play against Novara again on Sunday and we have time to rest. I was sorry that we had to play 120 minutes of football, we could have closed the game earlier but the players did well to get through it in the best way possible. Winning the way we did will help the team. Merkel had a good game. El Shaarawy played well and has grown a lot, especially in the last two months and he’ll definitely do well.” "The game showed that we have young players with good prospects bbut I want to underline that when the time came, the so called ‘old players’ showed character as well as technique. From this evening, I wanted us to approach the game well, to win and to get through to the next round. The players showed great character and professionalism. We’ll have to be ready again on Sunday, it’ll be a hard game in a ground we haven’t played on yet.El Shaarawy will stay with Milan, but I was sure of this even before the game.Mesbah is a left sided player with good feet, but I have to see hem in training to evaluate him. Emanuelson played a good game."STHEPAN EL SHAARAWY"When I’m given the occasion, I always try to give the best I can and I think I succeeded tonight. I’m staying here, both the coach and Galliani have said it and I’m happy about it.It was a very tough game. We had a few chances in the second half to tie it up and we could have done it earlier, but we put all the intensity possible into the game to get the right result and we did it. It was important to get through to the quarter finals. Playing with players like Pato and Robinho brings the best out of me. I’m lucky. I’m not sure if I’ll play on Sunday but I’ll keep on training. After that it’s the coach who makes the decisions. I dedicate the goal to my family and my brother who always come to the stadium o give me support. I scored with diagonal shot and I hope I’ll score more.”

A DESERVED RESULT

January 19th, 2012 No comments
MILANO – After 120 minutes of football played in the San Siro, it’s Milan who progress to the next round of the Italian Cup where they’ll face Lazio. El Shaarawy opened the scoring after 24 minutes only for Radanovic to equalise for the visitors late in the second half. Pato scored the decisive goal on 100 minutes of football played.Milan looked well in control of this game in the first half dominating possession in the first 45’. Pippo Inzaghi looked dangerous early on but Fontana was wide awake in goal for the visitors. On 8’ Milan’s number 9 brought the first save out of the keeper. Super Pippo also had a headed chance on 17’ after Antonini picked him out at the far post with an accurate cross. A minute later came the first chance for Novara through Simone Pesce who hit a shot from distance that Amelia did well to push out for a corner. The Rossoneri pressure was constant however and  the goal came after 24 minutes. Stephan El Shaarawy found some space on the edge of the area and beat the noavar keeper with a precisely angled shot. It’s the teenagers second goal for Milan, his first in the Italian cup. The visitors tried to answer back immediately with Granoche providing the most dangerous chance for them to get back into it, but Amelia was up to the task. Before the end of the first half, there was just time enough for El Shaarawy to make himself dangerous again with good work down the left but his shot brought out a good save from Fontana. The second half opened with Novara looking for the equaliser and Nesta was called into action early against Morimoto. As the minutes went by, Milan look to have the game in hand and also look dangerous on two occasions through Inzaghi. The striker didn’t make good contact with the first and the keeper made his presence felt for the second. Another good chance for the home team came on 57’. El Shaarawy showed good skill on the left but his pass to inzaghi was offside. Only a few minutes later, the applause of San Siro was loud and clear as Super Pippo made way for Pato. Emanuelson shoots too centrally on 68’. Milan make another change on 82’ with Emanuelson being replaced by Robinho. On 85’ El Shaarawy again gets pas two men in the middle of the field getting the ball to Robinho who in turn feeds Pato who shoots high. The slap in the face for the home team came on 88’. The first real shot in the second half from the visitors came from Radanovic whose shot from distance beat Amelia: Extra time.   Milan took the initiative immediately. Abate takes Antonini’s place and the first player to make himself dangerous is Robinho who has a couple of shots deflected into corners. On 98’, a big chance falls to Pato but a miracle from the keeper keeps the ball out. Only two minutes later however, El Shaarawy gives it to Robinho who feeds Pato who flicks it over the oncoming keeper and slams it home. The forward was dangerous again on 104’, just wide after being served by El Shaarawy. After 2 minutes of extra time, the game ends with the Rossoneri going into the next round of the cup where they’ll face Lazio in the quarter finals.

NOVARA: 56 YEARS ON

January 19th, 2012 No comments
MILANO – It’ll be a game reminiscent of times gone by. Milan’s next league meeting is against Novara. The last time the two played in the top flight was 56 years ago. The last game played between the two sides in Novara goes back to 1956. Milan came away 4-3 winners with goals from Ricagni and Schiaffino as well as a double form Nordahl. Prior to this year’s campaign, that season was the last time that Novara played in Serie A. The total number of league games between the two is 24 with a record of 15 wins for the Rossoneri, 3 draws and 6 losses. Taking into account only the games played in Novara, the results have been more balanced with 5 wins for Milan, five for the home team and two draws. Sunday will be the Rossoneri’s first visit to the “Piola” stadium, inaugurated in 1976, and it’ll also be the first time that the team plays a Serie A match on a synthetic surface. Milan come into this game after having played the same team in the cup on Wednesday evening at the San Siro.
