FROM THEN TO NOW: CASSANO’S SEASON

April 27th, 2012 No comments
MILAN – The circle closes. Back in the summer Antonio Cassano had the title to his name but was still looking to carve out a space for himself in the team. Market rumors said he was sure to leave the team while his coach and team mates encouraged him to put himself on the line. Then he was given the captain’s armband in Bari where Italy played world champions Spain, he scored in Malmoe pre-season, and on the opening day in Serie A against Lazio at the San Siro. A big month and a half for the player and prior to that fateful night on 29 October, Cassano had carved his name into this season’s starting lineup. And now after work, work and more work, Cassano is back where he needs to be. Big second half performances against Fiorentina, Genoa and Bologna mean that he’s available to Italy ahead of the European Championships and just yesterday Prandelli (who back in June had said: “Whoever isn’t playing for their teams loses self confidence and I want players who play often. Antonio has to make space for himself), spoke of the psychological strength of Antonio Cassano. The Jewel of Old Bari continues to shine. Cassano’s season to date:PRIOR TO 29 OCTOBER: 9 league games and 3 Champions League games685 minutes in Serie A and 214 in the Champions League 2 goals against Lazio and Palermo 3 assists for Ibra (Lazio), El Shaarawy (Udinese) and Yepes (Lecce) FROM EASTER SATURDAY:3 league appearances,80 minutes played

ON THE FIELD FOR THE FUTURE

April 27th, 2012 No comments
MILANELLO - 1999-2012: 13 years in a row for Milan Junior Camp in Italy and the World. The numbers speak volumes of the club’s ability to promote this cause. In the summer of 1999, Milan had 6 camps in Italy and last season 16,297 kids were followed by 280 club coaches in 159 locations in 42 countries for a total of 293 weeks of activity. Children from Ulan Bator, Sidney, Rio De Janierio, New York, Yokohama and Munich trained with the camps showing a real worldwide presence. Parents today who wish to enroll their children in the camp will certainly find an offer to suit their needs. There are the traditional summer camps where the kids stay in the football camp, there are the ‘city’ camps where the kids play and have lunch before heading home and there’s even the Elite Camp for goalkeepers under the supervision of Valerio Fiori as well as football camps with language lessons in Ireland and Ireland as well as in Spain. The success of this project lies in the combination of sport, fun and health and offers all the participants to train under expert supervision. The kids involved in the Milan Camps follow the latest training methods of physical preparation as well as technique and tactical improvement. The coaches are the best in the world as the club has invested a significant amount in them through the Milan Academy where all the Milan coaches study their trade.  Of course the highest attention is paid to the health of the children involved. Milan have been monitoring the general well being of all the youth sector through tests done by MilanLAb for the last two years. At the end of the Milan Junior Camp, all parents receive detailed information regarding the physical health of their children. The words, quantity, quality and continuity best describe the reasons behind the success of the most decorated club in the world and the most successful when it comes to the organization of events for young players, one of the pillars of the club’s success: The children themselves and the club’s desire to allow them to play the best game in the world from the youngest age possible. Milan junior, through marketing, scouting, research and education allows more than 40,000 children the world over to play the beautiful game thanks also to the participation of Intesa Sanpaolo, Addias, Pigna, Sky, Mediaset premium and Fly Emirates. MILAN JUNIOR CAMPS AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY There are also other initiatives such as those organized after the earthquake in Aquila thanks to the collaboration of Taci Oil group as well as the initiative directed at diabetic children. In 2011, thanks to the BCD campaign, IDF and Diabetes Italy, Sanofi and the Milan Foundation helped to send 70 diabetic football fans to the camps free of charge. This initiative will be repeated this year. In order to guarantee top levels of serenity and security, the coaches have received special training to deal with the needs of diabetic kids in the training pitch. Educational material has also been sent to all participants and their families regarding the importance of a healthy lifestyle both on and off the pitch. Last year’s experience has shown that this condition need not be a limit to sporting activity and can help to break down social barriers such as prejudice and preconceptions regarding the condition. Milan’s social initiatives don’t stop there either. Defender Luca Antonini helped present ‘Instradando In Campo’, a road safety initiative backed by various the city of Milan’s police force. The themes of road safety will be taught to the future drivers through the game of football. The project has been recognized and awarded by the region of Lombardy.

THE YEPES-NESTA WALL

April 26th, 2012 No comments
MILAN – In the month of April, the two games where clean sheets were kept were those played with Sandro Nesta and Mario Yepes at the back. Daniele Bonera has never disappointed and the injury to Thiago Silva hasn’t helped but with Nesta and Yepes in front of the goal, Milan didn’t concede against Chievo in Verona or against Genoa yesterday evening at the San Siro.Another statistical  point that should be underlined: With 71 points this time last season, Milan would have been 5 points ahead of Inter on 66, 6 ahead of Napoli on 65 and 11 ahead of Lazio on 60. Despite the numerous injuries, Milan have confirmed their spot this season at the top end of the table.

AHEAD LIKE THIS UNTIL THE END

April 25th, 2012 No comments
MILAN – Here’s what players and management had to say after Milan-Genoa this evening:MASSIMILIANO ALLEGRI“The players were good because what they did today wasn’t easy. Genoa closed off the spaces very well in the first half and also because we came here today on the back of a draw. I’m happy with the win and of course it keeps the title hopes alive even if there are now less games left and it gets very difficult. Today first of all we didn’t concede and when we don’t concede we can usually score in one way or another. We’ve had a lot of injuries this year and after the great effort that players put in, we needed to make some changes that we weren’t able to make. We’re working on Emanuelson as a full back and maybe he’ll be able to play there next year. You have to play to win and we’ll go ahead like this right until the end and then we’ll see what happens.”KEVIN PRINCE BOATENG "It’s a strange year with all the injuries. We have four matches left and we want to play them to win them all. It was very important for us to tget the three points here today. The first half was tough as Genoa played well. The team is happy. It was tough for me to be out for so long. My physique has always been my strong point but this year has been strange bacuse the injuries have limited me.We always play for the coach. This evening we won for the fans, for ourselves and for the coach. Juventus are a strong side, they play like a team. There are still four games left and we want to win them all after that, we’ll see what the league table looks like.” MARIO YEPES "I think this is the right attitude that we were looking for in these last games. We got a very important win this evening to be able to push on until the end of the season. We hope we can continue to keep the pressure on Juventus. It’s easier to play alongside Nesta as he knows me well but even with the other players it’s easy. The important thing is to give security to the team at the back because if we have that we know we’ll always score.I’m happy for Cassano because I know it’s important for him to do well in these games to get the European Championships. It’s not been an easy 6 months for him. Credit to him, he’s great player and he continues to make the difference. We have to play every game for the club, for ourselves and for the coach. We wear this jersey and we have to honor it. We’ll try and win all the games left and then if Juve are still ahead, so be it. We have to focus on winning. The important thing is to stay calm and try to win all the matches left; then we’ll see." LUCA ANTONINI "There are no easy games here. They closed up well and we had to find a way to get through to the goal. In the second half we started in the right manner. It was important to win and to get the three points from here until the end of the season that’s the way it’ll be. We had to get the win today for our morale as in the last couple of matches it even seemed that fans had lost enthusiasm. Boateng and Cassano gave us the shakeup we needed and they also gave us more depth. It’s obviously more difficult for the coach to pick his team when we’re all fit and able but it’s easier for us as we know that we can count on everyone. I’m happy to play on the right or the left but of course playing on my natural side is easier.MASSIMILIANO ALLEGRI (PRESS CONFERENCE) "It was important to win this evening to get to the 70 point threshold and keep the title hopes alive because you never know in football weha ve to keep on winning and that goes for Sunday as well. The only thing that I can do is give suggestions to the players, the coach is chosen by the club. We have to try and get to 83 points to get to one more point that we got last season. Of course Juventus are doing great things. We’ll talk about the future another time; I still have two years left on my contract.President Berlusconi called me on the eve of the game as he always does. I told him that I still believe in the tile and I hope that Juventus will drop points.Any player who comes on after injury can’t have 90 minutes in the legs. We’re not as sharp as a month ago. It would have been important to have the same players on the bench then that we have now. At the moment I can only thank the players for what they’re doing because they’re keeping the championship alive. We’ve been a bit unlucky. The players put in a great effort from round 6 t when we had a 4 point lead and throughout that period we only had 15-16 players. Having more players on the bench would have been easier. Last year we were the team that made the best substitutions with the games in progress because very often the players coming off the bench can be more important than the players who start the game. I’m happy with what Cassano is doing and I’ll try and give him to Prandelli with 95’ minutes in his legs! I’m sure he’ll be important for Italy and that he’ll have great Euro 2012."

STTILL ALIVE

April 25th, 2012 No comments
MILAN – A hard fought and deserved win against a Genoa side desperate for points this evening at the San Siro. It was a goal from Kevin Prince Boateng on 86’ that decided the game. The first shot in anger came from Muntari after something a mix up at the edge of the area which ended high. A minute later it was Genoa who looked dangerous with a shot from Kucka but Nesta got the block on it. On 22’ it was El Shaarawy, Abate and Nocerino who combined to good effect on the right hands side of the Genoa Penalty area but Sculli got there just ahead of Ibrahimovic. On 30’, El Shaarawy got the ball in the box and gave it to Ibra only for Granqvist to make a last ditch block. The final action of the first half came on 44’ with Ibrahimovic inside the area but his control let him down in front of Frey and the chance went begging. The second half started with an isolated chance for Genoa through Palacio but as always Nesta was there to take control. Five minutes later, the Rossoneri make a double change with Cassano and Boateng on for El Shaarawy and Van Bommel. Ibrahimovic soon after brought a great save out of Frey with a missile shot that the Frenchman did well to parry. Genoa responded through Kaladze first who brought a save out of Abbaiti and then through Palacio but Yepes did his job extremely well. Between 15’ and 17’, Milan had three chances. Antonini crossed into the box and Boateng looked like he was about to make the back of the net explode only for Biondidni to get a touch on the ball and knock it off his boot. Then it was a shot from Emanuelson which went just wide and finally Ibrahimovic whose shot came off Kaladze. On 25’ Ibrahimovic found some space in the area and set it up for Nocerino but the Italian’s shot was wide. On 27’ Jankovic got his second yellow and the visitors were down to 10 men. A minute later a great chance fell to Yepes whose shot was saved well by Frey. Cassano tried to curl one in from the edge of the area but was inches wide. Maxi Lopez came on for Antonini late on with Milan going for broke. On 41 minutes, the deadlock was finally broken through Boateng who knocked it between Frey’s legs and gave the Rososneri the win. After 4 minutes of injury time the final whistle went and Milan keep the pressure on Juve with a hard fought and richly deserved win.

RETURN TO SIENA

April 25th, 2012 No comments
MILAN – Milan have played Siena only 7 times in the Artemio Frachi stadium in the city. The precedents show 5 wins for the Rossoneri, 1 draw and 1 loss with 18 goals scored and 9 conceded. This is a game that has little history behind it. The first game between the two in Siena was on 17 April 2004 when Ancelotti’s Milan side came home with a 2-1 win thanks to Shevchenko and Kakà with a penalty from Chiesa in between. The previous year was the 2004/2005 season and was the only win for the home side. It was played on 17 April and the scores this time were reversed with the hosts winning 2-1 with Crespo opening the scoring for Milan but Chiesa and Cozza getting the three points for Siena. The 2005/2006 season was the only one when the Rossoneri left with a clean sheet.
