ONE GAME AT A TIME

(IN THE PHOTO: Massimiliano Allegri during the press conference)MILAN – Here’s what Massimiliano Allegri said to the gathered journalists on the eve of Milan-Atalanta:“Tomorrow will be a tough game against a team that concedes very little space. We’ll need to be patient. Atalanta didn’t deserve to lose against Lazio and they did well in Cagliari, they have the quality to do us damage on the counter attack. I was happy to have got Cassano ready for the European Championships just as I’m happy now that Pazzini is back in the national side. A coach works for his club but for the national side as well. Football is beautiful because it’s strange. We could have drawn against both Sampdoria and Bologna, instead we lost and then we won but now we have 3 points. We have to improve, especially in attack we have to be sharper: The team needs to be free mentally and not nervous about the result because we have a lot of new and young players in the squad. The best thing to do is to take it game by game without looking too far ahead. Now we have Atalanta and after that we go to Anderlecht. We have 7 games in 21 days and we’ll prepare for them one at a time”.“More than a 4-2-3-1, this year I have midfielders who can play wide and that allows me to change the formation during the game. De Jong and Ambrosini provide alternatives for each other but they can also play together. Niang? He’s 17 and should be judged as such even if he has good qualities. He’s one for the future, to talk about him as a starter seems excessive. I took off Pazzini in training yesterday after 20 minutes as he had a problem with his knee but I’m 90% sure he’ll play from the start. Judgements about myself don’t scare me. When I got here they said I wasn’t ready but in the last 2 years we’ve done better than anyone else. I‘m calm, it’s normal that a lot of coaches have the ambition to come and work here. I know the group I have available to me and I know we’ll face problems along the way but the results will speak for themselves and we’ll have to try and grow with a sense of calm that should mark us out. El Shaarawy tends to play on the left with us as well, not only with the Italian Under 21 side. He’s a 19 year old and he has a lot to learn. I think we tend to expect a bit too much from young players and we put too much responsibility on their shoulders. They have to grow both physically and tactically”.“Against Bologna we conceded very little until we scored then we stretched ourselves a bit too much. Clearing things up with Galliani? To clear things up, there would need to something to clear up and there hasn’t been. I’ve had dinner with him about 100 times since joining the club, we see each other often and I think that’s normal. Pato’s recovery is proceeding well. Robinho will be back before him and Montolivio is almost there, we have to see if he can play against Anderlecht without running any big risks. Coaches haven’t just to give out numbers from the bench; it’s not formations that make you win games but the organization and the players. It’s a bit presumptuous to say as much. Football isn’t basketball, it’s a different sport. De Sciglio can play on the left and we have good players there like Antonini, mesbah and Constant. Mexes is fine and if he doesn’t play tomorrow he might play in the Champions League. We have more subs on the bench this year so we’ll see tomorrow”.
