AC Milan hero Seedorf: Capello sacking Chelsea’s Terry always going to happen

February 14th, 2010 tribalfootball.com No comments

AC Milan midfielder Clarence Seedorf isn't surprised by England coach Fabio Capello's swift sacking of John Terry as England captain.

Well accustomed to Capello's autocratic style, Seedorf says he is not at all surprised by the coach's decision to strip Chelsea defender Terry of the England captaincy.

He told the Observer: "Capello couldn't do anything other than what he did. You have to send out the right message, I don't think you can get away with those things – like Thierry Henry and his handball, that was a big mistake that they did not punish him.

"Footballers are role models. At the One Young World summit [in London] last week I spoke about the responsibility we have as sportsmen in the public eye. Yes it is a shame that the story came out, but paparazzi and tabloids are just part of society and you as a sports celebrity should be aware of the risk.

"But Terry has been a great captain for Chelsea and England, and I hope he will be an even better captain in the future. Everybody makes mistakes."

Chelsea boss Ancelotti will make tough decisions if needed

February 13th, 2010 tribalfootball.com No comments

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti isn't afraid of laying down the law to his players.

The Italian boss benched Ronaldinho when he was in charge of AC Milan because of the Brazilian superstar's bad habits away from the pitch.

Skipper John Terry is out of today's FA Cup clash with Cardiff as he is in Dubai for crunch talks with his wife.

Ancelotti said: "When I see that a player's personal life is affecting their professional life, I will act.

"When that happens, it's a problem for me. It didn't affect us at Everton - we played badly and deserved to lose.

"I haven't spoken to Terry since he left. I spoke with him after Everton to tell him to rest for a few days. It was my decision to give him time off.

"He'll come back stronger. He needed to have some days recovery."

Man City veteran Vieira: Original Arsenal move almost never happened

February 8th, 2010 tribalfootball.com No comments

Manchester City midfielder Patrick Vieira admits his move to Arsenal almost never happened.

Vieira signed for £3.5million from AC Milan and became the first building block in Arsene Wenger's quest to lead his new side into an exciting new era.

But first there was that glimpse back into the past, from where Adams set the example for Vieira to follow.

"I'd often run into Arsene in the stands in Milan," Vieira told the News of the World.

"In a way, we were both spectators who were not doing very much. His season at Nagoya finished in October, he knew he was going to join Arsenal and I was hardly ever in the AC Milan team. So he asked if I was interested in moving.

"I was supposed to sign for Ajax, who were beginning to lose the players that had won them the Champions League two years earlier.

"I only found out recently that the Ajax deal didn't go through simply because of agents' fees. It's funny how a career can swing on such a detail.

"So anyway, - I ended up signing for Arsenal. I was completely out of my depth and didn't know what was happening.

"The first thing that happened was on one of my first days when Tony Adams started talking to everyone in the changing room.

"I could see that there was a lot of emotion among the players but I didn't understand a word and I wondered what on earth was happening.

"I learned later in the day that Tony Adams was, in fact, telling everyone that he was an alcoholic."

Beckham: Full West Ham XI could play for England in World Cup

January 12th, 2010 tribalfootball.com No comments

AC Milan star David Beckham says England can win the World Cup this year - because there's so many East Enders in the current squad!

England can field an ENTIRE TEAM of players who were either born in East London or who began their careers at West Ham (or play for them now).

England captain John Terry may play for Chelsea but he was born in Barking, was brought up on the same estate as Bobby Moore, and spent four years at West Ham from the age of 10.

Then there's Ashley and Ledley King - both born within the sound of Bow Bells - and a whole host of West Ham Academy boys like Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick.

Becks said: "It's obviously great to have so many East End lads in the squad.

"I suppose it doesn't matter where you are from when you are playing for England because you are all one team but, as an East End lad myself, to see so many East End boys out there just makes me proud.

"I don't know what it is about the East End that produces so many great players. To be honest there are many areas around the country that produce great talents - but we seem to be very good at it.

"I think the secret is that in the East End we're hungry. We always have been and always will be. Hopefully we'll continue bringing players through into the Premier League and into the England team as well."

Chelsea boss Ancelotti: Terry just like Maldini, Baresi

December 23rd, 2009 tribalfootball.com No comments

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has hailed John Terry's influence at Stamford Bridge.

It is Ancelotti's latest backing for his skipper, who at the weekend was accused of taking secret cash payments for a tour of the club's Cobham training ground, a claim that led to Chelsea releasing a statement insisting the 29-year-old did not "ask for or accept money".

Terry, named as one of the players in FIFA/FIFPro's world XI this year, has been publicly supported by Ancelotti - and the former AC Milan coach sees the same qualities in his captain as two defenders he played with at the San Siro.

"Terry is like Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini in personality, character and leadership," Ancelotti said. "I am very lucky to have this player as my captain."
